The Art of Mystery: Hardy Boys Under a Magnifying Glass
(Acrylic on Canvas with Wood Framing)

When artist Tony Napolillo was gifted an entire series of classic Hardy Boys books, spanning from 1960 to the mid-1970s, he embarked on a daily journey with his three sons into the thrilling, dangerous, and often absurd world of fearless teenage sleuths Frank and Joe Hardy. For years, their nightly ritual involved reading the adventures—becoming captivated by the outlandish plots, the complete disregard for safety, and how often the Hardys end up bound and gagged (spoiler: every book).

In this series of paintings, framed in makeshift, rough-cut borders that mirror the frenetic energy of the illustrations, Napolillo offers a fresh perspective on the artwork that accompanies each story. While the book covers are vibrant and detailed, the black line drawings inside present a more stripped-down glimpse into the Hardys’ world. But don’t be fooled by their simplicity—when magnified, hidden details emerge. The smallest pen stroke and negative space can transform into unexpected elements: a wisp of hair, a clenched fist, shifty eyes, or even a menacing snarl.

By focusing on only a portion of the original drawing and taking it out of the context of the story, he creates a new mystery for the viewer. Why did Callie pretend to faint? Who is the waiting opponent on whom a leather- clad Joe is about to pounce? What nefarious scheme is the shifty man in a turban plotting? And is Frank about to be mauled by a bear? The adventure is yours to unravel.
